Portland Art Show Explores Racist Nature of Policing
The keynote speaker was Alex Vitale, a well known author and critic of the institution of policing. Several panels addressed the history of policing in Portland and where to go from here. Portland Copwatch co-founding member Dan Handelman appeared on a panel about accountability. The show was born from the uprisings after the murder of George Floyd in 2020 and featured information about the Portland Police Bureau's brutal crackdown on protests (PPRs #81- 82), including a focus on the damage done by chemical weapons at those protests, and a new documentary about the police's biased response when a protofascist killed June "T-Rex" Knightly at a protest supporting Black lives in 2022. Those reading this newsletter before May 19 can still visit the show at PICA which is located at 15 NE Hancock Street in Portland.
