On Police Killed in the Line of Duty Bad Attitude In their January 30 issue, PDXS, Portland's own muckraking journal, featured an interesting article by Pete Springer on the use of the RICO Laws against urban gangs. However, his sidebar, referring to the number of police killed in the line of duty as compared to the number of civilians killed by police, is the kind of thinking that needs to he avoided. This is not some kind of one-to- one eye for an eye war. We must stop the police from abusing their power and killing. But comparing body counts does not lead to the de-escalation of violence in our society, or a breakdown of the "us vs. them" attitude which police continue to hold despite the promise of community policing. Public manipulated, you read it here first According to the Portland Police Association's Rap Sheet, in a review of Killed in the Line of Duty: a study of Selected Felonious Killings of Law Enforcement Officers, of 51 officer deaths studied by the FBI and the Department of Justice, none were killed with assault weapons. It says that only 2 of the officers killed did not make procedural errors when approaching the suspects.
