Correction Regarding PIIAC

PIIAC Staff member Lisa Botsko pointed out that in PPR #4 we erred in stating that PIIAC agreed with IID decisions on all the cases in 1994. In fact, the disposition of at least one case was changed after PIIAC returned the case to IID for further investigation. However, the change was from "unfounded," meaning it was a bogus complaint, to "insufficient evidence," which leaves it on an officer's record longer. Still, this is only a minor change. A change, for instance, from "unfounded" to "sustained" would result in the disciplining of an officer.

In some cities, such as San Francisco, review bodies are given simultaneous first-investigation rights with the police. Maybe if PIIAC had this power, they would be more effective.
