In other Oregon officer-involved shooting news: A Native American man, 36-year-old Anthony George, was shot and killed by Yamhill county deputies near Sheridan on October 31. Original press statements said George was trying to run over an Oregon State Trooper, yet he was shot sideways through the back and shoulder three times and a witness said he was driving away from police (Grande Ronde press release, 11/15); On November 12, Salem police shot and wounded a man who had set fire to police cars, crashed his car into the Marion County Courthouse, then set several fires in the building. He was in the courthouse for three hours before he was shot and captured (Associated Press 11/12); On November 25, Corvallis police had their first fatal police shooting in 14 years when two officers shot and killed Richard Dean Townsend, 50, who had severe emotional disabilities and came at them with a piece of pipe ‹or perhaps a walking stick (Corvallis Gazette-Times 11/27); On December 15, a Clackamas deputy shot and killed Donald Harold Graham, 44, who fled on foot after a car chase and was apparently not armed. Graham's wife, a passenger in the car, was arrested for identity theft (Clackamas Sheriff's Office, 12/16); and Portland officers shot and wounded a pit bull on October 10 who allegedly was "menacing school children and construction workers around SE 93rd Avenue and Woodstock" (Oregonian 10/12). |
