PIIAC Reforms Still Not Completed; New Staff Person Hired The PIIAC reforms Mayor Katz began instituting in January are only beginning to be put in place. On the good side, several trial mediation cases between officers and complainants have been completed. On the bad side, the process allows police to go through mediation and have the complaint taken off their record in a year, with the nature of the complaint not being part of a permanent record. On the good side, Lisa Botsko, who is trained in investigation, has been hired as the new full-time staff person for PIIAC. We met with Lisa, who is from Denver, where she worked investigating the backgrounds of government employees. She seems willing to look into any case of alleged misconduct which comes to IID, the mayor's office, or through the media. On the bad side, it remains to be seen whether a full time staff who is still confined to reviewing IID documents will be able to make a difference. On the good side, neighborhood coalition offices are supposed to be set up as intake points for complaints. On the bad side, none have begun taking complaints, and other community centers, such as the Albina Ministerial Alliance, have asked to become intake centers, and have not received support from the city.
So, keep an eye on PIIAC--go to the meetings of their citizen advisors
