Shootings/Deadly Force Incidents In Oregon Dec. 2013-April 2014 Law enforcement in Oregon never ceases to amaze, as these stories from the past four months will attest. On January 3, Oregon State Trooper Adam Kowing drove his police cruiser into Dale Wallace, 30, while they were trying to arrest Wallace on robbery charges. Wallace, who was rushed to the hospital in "serious" condition, allegedly pointed a gun at the cops. Police say his alleged accomplice Sara Jo Johnson, 30, shot and killed herself during the standoff (Oregonian, January 8). On January 22, Oregon State Troopers arrested David Turnbull, 44, in a Lakeview supermarket parking lot and found a knife and meth pipe; when they were bringing him to jail, he collapsed and died within a half an hour (Oregonian, January 24). The coroner said he "probably" died of acute methamphetamine poisoning (KGW, January 28). On February 11, Beaverton Officer Jeremy Shaw shot and wounded Herbert Rabago, 28, when police responded to a domestic disturbance call and Rabago allegedly came to the door with a knife. A spokesperson said Shaw had "no choice" (KEX, February 14). And in another incident not in Oregon but involving a man from Portland, a Vancouver, WA police officer shot and wounded Darryl Humphrey, Jr, early on March 11 after a nightclub fight escalated. Humphrey allegedly (a) was armed with a gun, and (b) "ignored officer commands," so he was shot (Oregonian, March 14). Update on Hillsboro shooting: Former Hillsboro officer Timothy Cannon, who engaged in a massive gunbattle with police in 2013 (PPRs # 59 & 61) pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted aggravated murder and, for shooting his pet cat, one count of animal abuse. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison in early February (Oregonian, February 7). |
