Change in Seeking Police Psychologist...
Will It Change Who Gets the Job?
For the third time in two years, the City of Portland has gone back to the drawing board to figure
out how to create a more inclusive panel of psychologists to screen potential officer candidates
(PPRs #56 & 58). After Portland Copwatch and the Albina Ministerial Alliance (AMA)
Coalition for Justice and Police Reform criticized the City for repeatedly extending their contract
with Dr. David Corey, a white man who lives in Lake Oswego, the contract was eventually split into
two parts when it was posted in June. One piece involves the screening of potential candidates,
while the other involves the "fitness for duty" exams for cops wishing to come back after some kind
of stress leave (including, we think, deadly force incidents, which require at least two visits to a
psychologist).
At PPR deadline, it was unclear whether the City's effort-- which was framed as a "Request
for Resumes" rather than the normal "Request for Proposals" to cast a wider net-- actually drew in
a more diverse set of applicants. In 2012, only one other person applied, then Corey was given the
contract.
