Racial Profiling Committee: Gearing Up Seven Months Later The City's Racial Profiling Committee finally got down to business and began working on action plans at four-hour meetings in June and July after spinning its wheels since being created in January (PPR #41). PCW member Dan Handelman is sitting on a subcommittee working on Data Collection and Analysis. In August, members of that subcommittee asked the Bureau for statistics on race and use of force that were not included in the Use of Force Report. Other subcommittees are working on Community-police relations (setting up dialogues, activities and perhaps a conference) and Police Policies and Practices (examining what existing policies might lead to racial disparities). Mayor Potter attended in August and said he would like the Committee to be a permanent fixture of the City until there is no longer a perception that profiling exists. |
